Atlético Madrid Lead Race for Marc Cucurella as Chelsea Set €50m Price Tag
In a developing transfer saga, Atlético Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella. According to Mail Sport, the Spanish giants have already opened preliminary talks with the player’s representatives over personal terms, while Chelsea are prepared to sanction a sale for a fee in the region of €50 million.
The 25-year-old Spaniard has endured a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge since his high-profile £55 million move from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2022. Initially signed under Thomas Tuchel, Cucurella has struggled to cement a consistent starting role amid fierce competition from Ben Chilwell and, more recently, Levi Colwill’s emergence as a left-sided defensive option. Despite flashes of his trademark energy and technical quality—most notably during a difficult 2022-23 campaign where he featured 33 times across all competitions—the former Barcelona academy product has found game time harder to come by under Mauricio Pochettino and the club’s ongoing tactical reshuffle.
Chelsea’s willingness to sell at €50m reflects both their need to comply with Premier League financial sustainability rules and a desire to recoup a significant portion of their initial outlay. With the Blues aggressively reshaping their squad under the Clearlake Capital ownership, outgoings are as crucial as arrivals this summer. Cucurella, still highly regarded for his versatility (he can operate as a left-back, left wing-back or even as an inverted full-back), represents a valuable asset who is far from surplus to requirements but deemed sellable for the right price.
For Atlético Madrid, the pursuit of Cucurella signals a clear strategic shift. Diego Simeone has long favoured robust, tactically disciplined full-backs, and the current options—Reinildo Mandava, who is returning from a serious knee injury, and veteran César Azpilicueta, who has since returned to Chelsea—have left the left flank as a priority reinforcement. Cucurella’s relentless engine, defensive tenacity, and ability to progress the ball align well with Simeone’s high-intensity, counter-attacking system. Moreover, his La Liga experience (having come through Barça’s ranks and later impressed at Getafe) makes him a low-risk adaptation.
Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. Cucurella remains keen on a return to Spain, where his family is based, and the chance to reignite his career under one of Europe’s most respected coaches is a compelling proposition. However, competition may yet arise. Reports suggest several Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa and a revamped Manchester United, are monitoring developments, though Atlético’s proactive approach has given them an early edge.
With the summer transfer window set to intensify, all eyes are on whether Chelsea and Atlético can bridge any gap in valuation. The €50m asking price is ambitious given Cucurella’s recent struggles, but the Madrid club’s history of negotiating shrewd deals—and the player’s clear desire to leave—could see an agreement reached closer to €40m-45m plus add-ons. For now, Cucurella’s departure from Chelsea appears increasingly likely, and the Wanda Metropolitano looks his most probable destination.
